In 1986 we provided a great deal of assistance to the Catholic Church in setting up, managing and financing schools situated on the outskirts of Khartoum and at Omdurman. These centres (also called "rakubas" or bamboo schools) cater for almost 52,000 children who, until recently, received, in addition to primary and secondary schooling, a daily meal. The results of these school-children have been extremely good and a number of them have obtained entrance to universities.
From the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year, financial difficulties have led the Archdiocese of Khartoum, following an in-depth study of the problem, to delegate the responsibility for managing these schools to the local parishes (priest and parents’ committee) under the overall responsibility of a Secretary of Education to whom Kamal acts as consultant.
Our Association has decided to continue granting some financial support to these schools, to the extent possible within our resources, in order to provide school materials, drinking water and other services.
