Professional background: worked with the local government in Juba in the early eighties. Promoted to the rank of Inspector of local government.
“My father was married to seven wifes. He was an activist. My brother was the leader of Aniania movement. My father had a lot of sufferings in prison. We had difficulties when we were left alone. I left the South in 89 during the war when the situation was unbearable.
My maternal uncle is the Bishop Paride, now retired. I was doing charity work with Kamal.
I joined SVDP because I was inspired by its work and the suffering of the people. I feel the sufferings of the people, the needy, I used to live in the villages, I know how they suffer. When I had this chance of working to help the poors, I felt very motivated. I am spiritually motivated to do this job. If you want to know God, you know him through the sufferings of the poor.”

The main problem is when they have to leave us, at 19, according to the law. Every year, we have to send about 100 young people away. We give them 50€ and all sort of advices and support. Some who went in the South have come back recently, because of the lack of work and medical care there” |

She told me: “You are here for 3 months, do something”. So I helped her. The idea was not to get money, but also to give services.
I came in Khartoum in 1987. I worked in education, in the schools created by the Church.

The Archbishop there already made a central Council. He is very much interested in our work. He gave us the land for our future vocational training centre.

According to me, the Juba project is one of the important one. Our presence there is necessary to contribute to the development of the Southern Sudan. Now my service with the Society has reached 19 years, and up to now I could not spare any money to secure the future of my family... But despite the low salary, I am convinced to carry out this services for the benefit of the whole Sudanese community.” |

Place of birth: Equatoria.
Ethnic group: Fugalo (Bari).
Catholic
Arrived in Khartoum in 1985
Joined SVDP in 1994
Sent by SVDP in Cairo to improve his training.
“I like the job, because I feel myself as a member. Whenever we have difficulties, we use to share them with the office, and we try to find solutions.
People who graduate from our training program either become independent workers (they go to market and find everyday jobs), or they get employed in organizations. We have set up a Follow-up Committee to keep in touch with our graduates.
The first challenge is to teach people who are often illiterate. Then there is the control of the budget, knowing that inflation is high, that the government has just increased the VAT from 10 to 15%, and that the materials used in certain training are expensive, like wood in carpentry, or tools and liquid in refrigeration...
Another problem is the transport of these materials, as we only have one vehicle for our 6 centres.
Then, due to lack of means, we cannot meet the criteria for the recognition of our certificates by the Government. Finally, our centre in Mayo has been severely damaged by floods. As it is not a permanent structure (unlike our other centres), it could happen again. Not to mention the fence that we have to build around the centre, for fear of eviction by the authorities...” |
